About Kawah Ijen

Kawah Ijen volcano (2386m) may be a lively stratovolcano located within the eastern neighborhood of Java Island. the very best of the Ijen volcano is characterized by a very acidic crater lake containing 27.5 million m³ of turquoise-colored water. This lake is that the most important reservoir of hot and acidic water on Earth.

On the southern neighborhood of the lake, fumaroles are ejecting many sulfurs each day. At night, this site is one of the only spots on Earth where it’s possible to see blue fires.

This is due to extremely popular gas coming from the volcanic conduits burning the sulfur, which ends up in extremely beautiful scenery. In the western neighborhood of the crater, a dam was built hundred years ago upstream of the Banyu Pahit river.

The water within the crater lake features a pH of not up to 0.3 on a scale of 0 to 14 (7 is neutral). For comparison, juice features a pH of 2; battery acid features a pH of 1. That acidity affects the chemistry of nearby river ecosystems, including the river Banyupahit.

Originating at the lake, the Banyupahit delivers acidic water to populated areas downstream. according to a 2005 research paper, the river water that local farmers use to irrigate crops features a pH between 2.5 and 3.5. the normal range for stream water, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, is between about 6 and eight. Kawah Ijen Volcano Location

Kawah Ijen is a composite volcano located at the easternmost part of Java island in Indonesia and hosts the largest natural acidic lake in the world. The border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency, Java, Indonesia, Mountain type is Stratovolcano.

Kawah Ijen Volcano | eruption

The volcano remains active. The last magmatic eruption occurred in 1817. Phreatic eruptions occurred in 1796, 1917, 1936, 1950, 1952, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. These have caused very little damage but present a danger to anyone mining sulfur or visiting the caldera.

The sulfur, which is deep red in color when molten, pours slowly from the ends of these pipes and pools on the ground, turning bright yellow as it cools. The miners break the cooled material into large pieces and carry it away in baskets. Miners carry loads ranging from 75 to 90 kilograms (165 to 198 lb), up 300 meters (980 ft) to the crater rim, with a gradient of 45 to 60 degrees, and then 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) down the mountain for weighing. Most miners make this journey twice a day.

A nearby sulfur refinery pays the miners by the weight of sulfur transported; as of September 2010, the typical daily earnings were equivalent to approximately $13 US. The miners often receive insufficient protection while working around the volcano and complain of numerous respiratory afflictions. There are 200 miners, who extract 14 tons per day – about 20% of the continuous daily deposit.

As with every natural sighting, its height and intensity depend on various conditions and cannot be predicted. The flames have been known to reach more than 5 meters in height but this is not always the case. 1. Kawah Ijen Volcano tour from Bali 1 Day

Starting from Denpasar Airport, Kuta, Ubud, Sanur, or any other place in Bali, our English-speaking driver will pick you up at 6 pm, with an AC vehicle to bring you to the most western part of Bali in Gilimanuk (Ferry terminal to Java). The trip takes about 4 hours.

Once in Gilimanuk, the ferry ride takes 1 hour to reach Ketapang (Banyuwangi ferry terminal). Remember that Java is h-1 compared to Bali.

From there, at around 12:00 am we will bring you to the Paltuding rest area (1-1,5 hours). The road offers a number of magic landscapes in the middle of rice fields, small villages and one one the last primary tropical rainforest left on Java island rounded by numerous volcanoes. You will mainly enjoy those sceneries on the way back during the daytime.

From Paltuding Area, at around 1:30 am, you will start hiking to Ijen Crater. It takes about 1:30 -1:45 minutes for the 3km hike following a gentle slope and slightly uphill to reach the summit.

The path is pretty well maintained and in good condition and other views of rounding volcanoes and luxurious vegetation will accompany your journey.

From the crater rim, providing you with a gas mask, we will bring you down to see the blue fire right on the edge of the acidic lake (temperature of the lake: +- 40°c; Ph: 0,5; max depth:+-200m).

The laker is also the source for the river Banyupahit, resulting in highly acidic and metal-enriched river water which has a significant detrimental effect on the downstream river ecosystem.

Hike to go down (+- 45mins, rocky).

After enjoying the spectacular Blue Fire, we go back to the crater rim to enjoy the sunrise over the entire volcanic area.

The hike to go down takes about 45mins – to 1h. The driver will pick you up in Paltuding to go to have breakfast. After breakfast, we continue our journey to the Ketapang ferry terminal to cross to Bali (ferry +-1h).

Once in Bali, it takes about 4-5 hours to reach Denpasar, Ubud, Kuta, or Sanur. (Keep in mind that Bali is H+1 compared to java time). ARRIVAL at your final destination at 3-4 pm

Day 01: Arrival 

Our driver will pick you up from Juanda International Airport Surabaya or your hotel in Surabaya then drive you to the hotel in the Banyuwangi area driving around 6 hours. Afterward, you will stay there for one night and for free leisure.

Day 02 : Kawah Ijen Tour

At 12.30 AM, We will pick you up and take you to the slope of Mount Ijen, passing through plantations and rainforest. This is one of the few remaining on the island of Java with giant ferns and plants, and big trees, this journey takes approximately 1,5 hours from the hotel. Arriving at the parking area of Mount Ijen.

Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours will be required to ascend the slope of mount Ijen to reach the peak of Ijen Crater and along the path, You will enjoy the stunning natural scenery with fresh air & shady.
